End of the Year

The end of the year is upon us. English 1 is meant to focus on young adults (like yourselves) on purpose. What life lessons can you take away from the literature read throughout the year?

Below is a list of texts read to help you remember the themes discussed throughout the school year:
-Animal Farm
-Lord of the Flies
-Possibility of Evil
-Speak
-The Glass Castle
-The House on Mango Street
-A Long Way Gone

  1. Some lessons I can take away from this Speak is to speak up before it gets too late in life. I say this because in the book Melinda refuses to speak out and gets taunted by her rapist. If Melinda choose to speak out about what happened in the party she could have prevented the taunting.Another lesson I have learned from speak is there may be something bad going on with your life but in the end everything will be alright . I say this because in the book Melinda was told too draw a tree for her art project representing her,she ended up doing the tree with seasons that represented her from the beginning to the end.In the end there is always hope for a better life. The emotions I felt during this book were hope for melinda to find herself I also felt sadness because no matter what happened to Melinda earlier at that party she did not desrve to be raped . Another book I have taken lessons from is The Glass Castle. The family in The Glass Castle has its days but in the end everybody has there struggles as a family.I think that people guess how a family relationship and assume its all perfect but everybody has there struggles.Another lesson I have taken out of this book is that the father is teaching Jeanette that this is reality and this is world but in reality this is not the world and it will die out.She is feeding on information that is false from her parents.I think these two books that I have read have been a lesson learner. In this book I was shocked that parents would treat their children like this.I also feel hopeful because in the end there is hope for the children and they realize that life isn't pictured like how they taught.

  2. I think literature is one of the best ways to learn more beacuse it tells you were everything takes place in a book. When im reading each piece i receive each meaning sometimes that relate to me, which gives more meaning to everything i read. The way i think while reading something, or the reasons why i like one type of literature and not other types, is all because of the experiences that i went through means alot to what i read. To me reading is a lot more interesting than most people realize. I think people should give it a chance and try to connect to the story as if they were in the book. For example glass castle was based on the little girl and her parents beung selfish and not thunkng or paying attention to there child. I kind of went through the same thing exempt my mom gave me the most attention than my dad. My mom always made sure i was clean and had everything i needed. When ever i went to go with my dad for the weekend he was not paying attention to me and always left me in the same clothes and abused me. He did noot give me any atteton becuase he was to busy talking to his girfrind and never made sure was okay. He didnt have a clean life and did drink alot and took terapy for what he did to me. In conclusion i didnt have an easy life either. So i feel like i related to this bod alot.

  3. The books that we were provided for this years English are jam packed with life lessons everybody can learn and follow with a great chance of success. A lot of the books talk about personal stories that most people will not encounter in there life time, like rape and war. For example In the book "Speak" Melinda does everything she can to avoid talking to people, but at the end she realizes that speaking could of been the very thing that saved her life. That goes for everybody, it might not be so drastic but it really could help you get over something that has been bothering you. In "The glass castle" Jeanette got 3rd degree burns and had to get a skin graph, Not a lot of people have gone through the pain and had to get skin graph but there are still life lessons from that book, No matter the life you were born into and how your parents raised you, you can still become something successful. In the book "A long way gone" Ishmael is put through a lot for just a 13 year old, he left his family at only 12 and has been in way too many close encounters.

  4. The life lessons I can take away from literature and the school year are when life knocks you down you have to pick yourself back up and keep pushing. Ismael from A Long Way Gone was knocked down by the war and was crushed when rebels killed his family, but he kept on pushing forward and didn't stop. He pushed forward so he could survive the war and save himself. Even when you feel like life is at it's lowest you have to keep pushing on because life is bound to get better sooner or later.

  5. In the books that we read this year the theme is that even though life gets you down eventually it will get better. Melinda in Speak showed that even though she went through getting rapped and major depression it started to get better for her. Ishmael showed that after what he went through his life started to get better again. In a Glass Castle, Jeanette was able to have a better life after what she went through.

  6. What I've learned from this of reading book and reading to book A Long Way Gone is that anything can happen in a matter of a week or even and couple of seconds and I wouldn't ever would want to go through what Ishmael went through seeing is family die.And his friends and being forced to to kill people he'll would've been killed by one of the soldiers and even though the soldier show Ishmael what would happen to him if he left. Or like the book SPEAK. The book speak is about a girl who got raped by a high school senior and didn't speak out until everything got even more crazy then if had to be this is what I leaned this year.
